Marvin Gaye
What's Going On
Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is about social issues including the Vietnam War, poverty, police brutality, and environmental degradation, as seen through the eyes of a returning Vietnam veteran. Inspired by a police brutality incident witnessed by Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Gaye wrote the song as a protest against the era's social and political turmoil and created a concept album that continued these themes.
